PaperWorks; Collage + Paper Making with Mark Hearld
January 18th - 24th, 2026
Known for his joyous depictions of the natural world, artist Mark Hearld’s PaperWorks workshop is a deep dive into Indian paper making and Sanjhi paper cutting tradition. Working with hand made paper techniques from natural and recycled materials, Mark + local paper artists guide us through layered compositions referencing traditional techniques. Herald’s discovery of Indian craft through Wonderful Workshops has led us to develop this unique course merging one of Jaipur’s core crafts with his own practice.
During the week we will be researching a variety of paper focused Indian art forms, making our own raw materials such as rag paper from plant and textile fibres, printing and dyeing papers with natural dye and pigment, collecting and discovering contemporary and antique paper materials throughout the city to assemble intricate multilayered collages and artworks.
Born in 1974, Mark studied illustration at Glasgow College of Art and then completed an MA in Natural History Illustration at the Royal College of Art. Taking his inspiration from the flora and fauna of the British countryside, Mark works across a number of mediums, producing limited edition lithographic and linocut prints, unique paintings, collages and hand-painted ceramics.
Mark has recently completed commissions for Faber & Faber and Tate Museums. Hearld has illustrated a children's book with a series of unique collages, published by Walker Books, Merrell Books published Mark Hearld's Work Book - the first book devoted to Mark's work, and in 2022 Raucous Invention - The Joy of Making.
