Miniature Painting with Olivia Fraser + Ajay Sharma

€1,750.00

This course focuses on the unique traditions and ancient techniques of miniature painting.

Ajay and Olivia will guide us through the many stages of the process, including how to prepare the paper using gum arabic and an agate stone, how to grind and mix pigments in shells, prepare kajal for outline and apply the base paint and colour fill. There is a specific order to building the layers of a miniature painting. We will learn brush technique with squirrel hair miniature painting brushes, the application of metal foils, gold-work and the final burnishing of the painting.

There will be outings to the Old City’s bazaars to see the making of gold leaf and to purchase additional pigment if desired and to an artisan paper-making workshop in Sanganer.

It’s a wonderfully intense week, mixing as it does the chaos of Jaipur with the meditative calm that pervades miniature painting at its best.

Olivia Fraser is an artist & illustrator who specialises in miniature painting techniques. She shows with the Grosvenor Gallery in London and at the Delhi Art Fair, and has had solo shows in New York and at the Venice Biennale. She has also written and illustrated children’s books for an Indian NGO dedicated to increasing literacy. Her works are in public and private collections all over the world including India, Australia, Singapore, UK, Belgium and USA.

Ajay Sharma is a Master Miniature Painter, recognised throughout India and internationally. He teaches all over the world, including an annual residency at the Princes School in London, and receives many students at his own studio in Jaipur, including Fulbright scholars from the USA.
