Miniature Painting with Olivia Fraser + Ajay Sharma
This course focuses on the unique traditions and ancient techniques of miniature painting.
Ajay and Olivia will guide us through the many stages of the process, including: how to prepare the paper using gum arabic and an agate stone, how to grind and mix pigments in beautiful shells, prepare kajal for outline and apply the base paint and colour fill, there is a specific order to building the layers of a miniature painting. We will learn brush technique with squirrel hair miniature painting brushes, the application of metal foils, gold-work and the final burnishing of the painting.
There will be outings to the Old City’s bazaars to see the making of gold leaf and to purchase additional pigment if desired and to an artisan paper-making workshop in Sanganer.
It’s a wonderfully intense week, mixing as it does the chaos of Jaipur with the meditative calm that pervades miniature painting at its best.
