Indigo Dye and Dabu Printing with Raj Kanwar, Natalie Gibson + Di Livey

In this dynamic and physical workshop we will learn the techniques and processes of Dabu (mud resist) and indigo dyeing. Working with different methods of mud resist application such as block printing with wooden carved blocks, freehand painting /brush application and experimentation with tie and dye resist, we will learn how to prepare and use the indigo vat for dyeing.
In addition to the indigo dyeing process we will explore producing different colors and tones, by over-dyeing with other vegetable/pigment dyes including pomegranate, turmeric, and kassis. We will also have the opportunity to embellish the finished mud and indigo work with pigment over printing and also specialist gold and silver printing.
Encouraged to experiment with and explore the enormous potential of the technique, blending tradition with a contemporary approach to create a unique and exciting body of work which will be displayed in our group exhibition at the close of the programme.
No previous experience or knowledge necessary.
Course Leaders
Raj Kanwar is a textile designer with 45 years of experience in textile crafts, specializing in Hand Block Printing & Vegetable Dyes and printed textiles, reviving and innovating contemporary use of traditional techniques, skills and designs with a focus on sustainable and eco conscious practices.
Natalie Gibson has been teaching at Central Saint Martins in London, for over 40 years and in that time has taught and worked with some of the best known names within the design and fashion world. It is Nat’s love of design, colour, art, world culture, people and animals (mainly cats, but also other ones) through which she finds her inspiration and enjoyment of life.
Di Livey is a visual artist working in London. She studied printed textiles at Chelsea College of art and received her masters from the Royal College of Art. She was one of the founding artists of Chisenhale Studios and Gallery. Di has taught as a university lecturer for most of her career and continues her art practice working with found textiles, print, lead, plaster and paint, creating sculptural painted objects.
