In collaboration with female artists of the Bhatt community, Susan Cianciolo guides this week long workshop creating traditional Kathputli marionette puppets + dolls, carving and painting wood and using scrap fabrics to create their garments.

The nomadic tribal Bhatt community dates back centuries and Khatputli artists have narrated folk tales, history and epics through puppetry over generations. Their craft is integral to Rajasthan’s identity and cultural legacy.

With a strong focus on repurposing, Susan Cianciolo’s innate ability to bring meaning to neglected materials is transformative. Through garments and performance, aspects of Cianciolo’s work draws divine parallels with pillars of Kathputli storytelling practices.
