Jewellery as Sculpture with Gala Colivet Dennison
Working in silver, Gala's sculptural approach to jewellery making harmonizes stones and metal in a style that is at once primitive and modernist. Over the course of this workshop, we will work with hand pulled silver, stone setting and stone carving, creating unique jewellery and objets d'art. Learning from India, we will cover famed techniques from the Mughal court such as Kundan setting, Meenakari enameling, stone significances related to astrology and healing capabilities from a renowned gem healer and the art of harnessing the potential of gemstones through hand carving.
Gala Colivet Dennison is a jewellery designer based in London. Working with Silver and Gold, her practice is driven by an exploration of the potentials and limits of precious metals and an understanding of how to work intuitively with materials. Her work is functional and unconventional, intentionally heavy in weight and gestural in form.
Informed by her training in sculpture, Gala’s expertise in composition and balance, allows her to move across different scales and material approaches. Channeling her own experiments in weight and texture she relies on sensing how material responds to both the pressure from her hands and applied heat to direct the final form of a piece. Having always been drawn to organic forms with complex surfaces, the use of stones in her work is centred around not so much the precious mess of the stone but more it’s raw beauty and their formal properties.
Born in Hackney and raised in rural Normandy, France, Gala has a background in sculptural design, graduating from Kingston University with a BA Fine Art. Later studying Silver Smithing for three years at a technical College in London, to support her otherwise self- taught practice as a jewellery designer.
